Hello Liquid poker.

I'm just getting into online poker and the purpose of this blog is to help me keep track of my progress. I find writing things down helps me think more clearly.

I'm starting poker because I have 6 months till I start at University and quite a lot of time on my hands, even after my real job. I'm basicly planning on substituting my Starcraft time for poker for a few months, and seeing how far I get. My goals are pretty modest, it would be nice to be able to use poker as a way to get a little extra cash in my pocket in a way that allows me to invest as much time as I want, when I want. I hope I will have some aptitude for it since I think I am patient, of reasonable intelligence and have good self control. Of course, by September I might simply find I can't make any reasonable money out of poker. If that is the case I will just give up.

So, from what I have read on this site and others, I think I have picked up some key points for how not to be a fish:

Bankroll management. I'm going to be playing 1$ no limit at first on titan poker. So my bankroll is many times larger than the buyins I have. Hopefully I won't go busto as I try to grind this amount up.

Don't be results oriented. My goal right now is just to improve my skill, not get cash. So I will try to worry more about whether I am playing a particular hand correctly, rather than whether I won or lost in that instance. Actually as a beginner I find it hard to judge whether I just got lucky or played well. I suppose I just need to have a many more 1000s of hands under my belt.

I'm not going to be playing too many tables at once, probably 3 or 4 at most. I'm not sure if at this stage I should be trying to make notes on the other players, perhaps that is a bit too cute for my level of play?

The one bit of my own money I have invested so is Ed Miller's book, “Get Started in hold em”. Should arrive early next week, so I am looking forward to that.
